All Hail Hatfield! Get Your Umbrellas and Turn Out! -- These were some of the headlines in the Dawson Daily News on June 5, 1906. The excitement was caused by the imminent arrival of Charles Hatfield, rainmaker.
The summer of 1905 was very dry. Many miners who relied on the summer rainfall to finish their sluicing had been forced to stop work early. In desperation, the Yukon Council contacted Hatfield, but he was too busy that season to make the trip. However, for $10,000 he agreed to come to the Klondike the next spring.
